Meet Liberica Barako, the bold and untamed coffee that defines the Philippines. Grown in Lipa, Batangas, this rare coffee species represents only 2% of the world’s total coffee production—and just 1.1% of that still thrives in its homeland. Bold, smoky, floral, and deeply aromatic, Liberica Barako carries the true soul of Filipino coffee.
Unlike Arabica or Robusta, Philippine Liberica coffee—known locally as Barako—is a species found in very few regions of the world. Its large beans, towering trees, and distinct flavor set it apart. Each sip offers a wild mix of smoky dark chocolate, roasted peanuts, and tropical jackfruit, finished with the aroma of heritage and hard work.
This isn’t just coffee.
This is the root of Filipino coffee culture.
The word Barako comes from the Filipino term for wild boar, a symbol of strength, courage, and power. Barako trees grow over 20 feet high, and their beans are just as bold. For centuries, this has been the brew of the farmers, elders, and dreamers—the coffee of the brave.
At Teofilo Coffee Company, we partner directly with smallholder farmers across Lipa, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, and Sierra Madre to keep Liberica Barako alive. Every bag supports local livelihoods, honors tradition, and shares the legacy of Philippine coffee with the world.
